The Texas Health and Human Services Commission and UT Southwestern Medical Center hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of the Texas Behavioral Health Center in Dallas.

Gov. Abbott and the Texas Legislature approved funding for the design and construction of the Texas Behavioral Health Center. Additionally, Children’s Health donated funding to construct a pediatric wing.

Once fully operational, the inpatient psychiatric hospital will have 292 beds, with 200 for adults and up to 92 reserved for pediatric patients. Admissions are scheduled to begin this summer.

HHSC partnered with UT Southwestern to design and build the new facility. UT Southwestern will also operate it.

The 456,265-square-foot facility offers a variety of therapeutic, recreational and social spaces that prepare patients for life outside the hospital. The patient complex has a beauty salon, café, gym, greenhouse and chapel. The hospital uses natural lighting throughout patient rooms and common areas, and secure outdoor spaces support comfort, reflection and well-being.
