Using light to disinfect mobile devices

November 6, 2017

A researcher at the University at Buffalo is using existing technology to create a device that uses light to kill germs on mobile devices, according to an article on the WBFO website.

UB Professor Edward Furlani is a professor of Electrical Engineering as well as Chemical and Biological Engineering.

Furlani is working with CleanSlate UV's sanitizing technology and Grantwood Technologies out of Rochester, using an efficient LED light inside a special case for cleaning.

"It's already being placed in environments like hospitals and food service, where these kind of issues are more important," he said in the article.

Furlani expects the process to be available within 12-18 months.
