For instance, The CDC, several state health departments and the FDA are investigating a multistate outbreak of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli. Seventeen people across 13 states became infected with the bacteria from Nov. 15 through Dec. 8.
Also, 28 residents and 11 employees contracted norovirus at Narrows Glen, a Tacoma, Wash.-based senior living community. Facility staff notified the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department of the outbreak Dec. 22.
The Sunnyvale (Texas) Independent School District closed three schools on Dec. 12 and Dec. 13 after influenza kept 85 students at its elementary school home on Dec. 11. While the schools were closed, janitors worked to disinfect each of the district's three campuses.
