ASHE Hospital Construction Survey finds regulations create unnecessary burden

Questions about compliance issues were asked for the first time in this year’s survey

Correcting compliance issues caused by conflicting or improper code interpretations costs an average of 10 percent of a hospital’s construction spending, according to the 2019 ASHE Hospital Construction Survey conducted by ASHE’s Health Facilities Management magazine.

Questions about compliance issues were asked for the first time in this year’s survey, which also covered construction projects and budgets.

“The importance of compliance is protecting lives,” Jonathan Flannery , senior associate director of advocacy for ASHE said in an article on the Health Facilities Management website . “Keeping patient and staff safety foremost in mind, we don’t want to do things just to save money. But we want to do things in a way that uses resources wisely.”

Thirteen percent of design funding was spent on consultants for compliance issues over the past three years, according to the survey.
