All-Electric UCI Health – Irvine Hospital Set to Open

The 144-bed facility will be the nation’s first all-electric acute care hospital, serving the residents of coastal and south Orange County.

Hundreds of south Orange County residents and UCI Health co-workers came together to celebrate the upcoming opening of UCI Health — Irvine, the growing academic health system’s sixth hospital.

The 144-bed facility will be the nation’s first all-electric acute care hospital, serving the residents of coastal and south Orange County.

Its opening will complete the medical complex on Jamboree Road. Last year, the Joe C. Wen & Family Advanced Care Center and the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center and Ambulatory Care building began serving patients.

Tours of the new hospital showcased how patient safety, quality care and sustainability are woven into the hospital’s design.

Those who toured the seven-story hospital were able to experience:

  • Patient rooms that are 250 square feet on average — larger than standard hospital rooms — to allow families and loved ones to remain more comfortable when visiting.
  • 75-inch smart televisions in each room where patients will be able to order delicious food, interact with their care team, get discharge instructions, condition and treatment information and stream entertainment.
  • Natural light, artwork emphasizing soothing natural landscapes, outdoor terraces and gardens full of native plants.
  • One of the nation’s first all-electric kitchens to serve a hospital.

Sustainable furnishings and furniture free of harmful chemicals, vapors and materials.

Services that will be available at UCI Health — Irvine include:

  • Cardiology monitoring unit
  • Epilepsy monitoring unit
  • 24-hour emergency room
  • Bone marrow transplant/cellular therapy service
  • Interventional radiology
  • Catheterization services
  • Observation unit
  • Advanced imaging
  • Inpatient and outpatient pharmacy services
  • Blood bank, laboratory and pathology services
  • Gift shop
