Another UPMC patient with mold infection dies

UPMC says that pneumonia was the cause, while confirming the patient had a fungal infection

A transplant patient who contracted a fungal infection during a recent stay in the UPMC Montefiore hospital in Oakland, Pa., has died, according to an article on the TribLive website.

There are conflicting accounts of the circumstances of the death: UPMC said pneumonia was the cause while confirming he had a fungal infection. The patient's attorneys contend the mold led to his death.

Dan Krieg, 56, is the fifth known UPMC patient with a fungal infection to die since 2014 amid an ongoing federal investigation into mold cases at the health system's facilities.

Krieg's illness could center on his placement in March in a negative-pressure room in UPMC Montefiore, where he returned seven months after a successful kidney transplant.
