A group which includes the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Boston Medical Center has signed an agreement to purchase almost all of its electricity through a new solar farm being constructed in North Carolina, according to an article on the Boston Business Journal website.
The 650-acre project — the largest renewable-energy project ever to be constructed in the U.S. through an alliance of different buyers — will be completed by the end of this year.
In addition, the Yawkey Ambulatory Care Center at Boston Medical Center has an innovative HVAC project that will save the hospital and the environment 4,631,895 kWh/year. The hospital is also in the midst of developing a combined heat and power plant.
“This purchase is equivalent to 100 percent of BMC’s projected electric consumption, making us the greenest hospital in Boston and on pace to become the first carbon-neutral hospital in New England upon the completion of our campus redesign,” said Robert Biggio, vice president of facilities and support services at BMC, in a release.
