Broward Health CEO discusses Fort Lauderdale airport shooting

Hospital took in more than 50 patients following the incident

After 13 people were shot in the lower level baggage claim area of the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport, nearby Broward Health started receiving victims, according to an article on the Hospitals & Health Networks website.

Interim Broward CEO Mark Sprada, R.N., credits the facility's preparedness to disaster drills conducted with the airport and other community members.

The hospital's incident-command systems have been standardized following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

“Whether you have an influx of patients from a chemical spill, a bio-terrorism event, plane crash, a bus crash or a shooting, you still have to have your emergency personnel ready to go. The fortunate thing for hospitals is we’ve had these standards for a number of years,” Sprada said.
