CMS urges action on required emergency exercises

Medical facilities warned not to wait until fall to implement new emergency preparedness rule

Medical facilities have been warned by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services not to wait until fall to implement new emergency preparedness rule, according to an article on the HC Pro website.

For hospitals, that means taking part in two exercises — including one that is “full-scale” and, preferably, a collaborative community effort — by the November 15 deadline, the article said.

Failure to complete the exercise on time will result in a citation for noncompliance.

If a full-scale, community-based exercise is not possible, facilities should conduct an exercise on their own and document the circumstances that prevented a larger, more cooperative drill.
