Canadian hospitals praised for carbon footprint reduction

Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare has been making headway on its energy reduction efforts

Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare has been recognized for making progress on its energy reduction efforts, according to Muskoka Region website.

The Ontario Hospital Association cited Muskoka Algonquin for their energy program, focusing on the national movement to enhance energy conservation through data analysis — instead of traditional energy audits that focus on equipment replacement and capital investment, hospitals are reviewing energy trends, standards and best practices to reduce their carbon footprint.

Muskoka Algonquin has saved about $185,000 by improving lighting, adjusting its heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, and adding building automation at each of its acute-care sites.

Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare was previously ranked among the worst energy performers among Ontario hospitals.
