Children's Hospital & Medical Center Breaks Ground on New 10-Floor Pediatric Facility

On Thursday, December 8 at 2 p.m., Children’s Hospital & Medical Center broke ground on its new $450 million, 10-story, 500,000-square-foot clinical facility.

During the event, the design as well as the new name were revealed. In recognition of the lead gift from the Theodore F. and Claire M. Hubbard Family Foundation, the new Hubbard Center for Children will not only improve but transform pediatric healthcare in the region and beyond. The launch of this project ushers in an exciting era of growth for the region’s pediatric healthcare leader.

“The demand for the high-quality pediatric care we provide is growing rapidly, straining our current facilities,” explains Richard G. Azizkhan, M.D., Children’s President & CEO. “We must expand—in space and scope— because children and families are counting on us to be the best now and into the future. It is ambitious, but it’s because we care.”

Having operated at capacity in recent years, the new facility will include more than 70 inpatient beds with space to expand. In addition, Children’s plans to bring100 pediatric specialists on board over the next four to five years.

Speaking at the groundbreaking, Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert highlighted the significance of Children’s expansion for the greater community given the number of jobs the project will create and the growth in medical research. "We're so lucky in the city of Omaha that we have so much going on in the level of medical research; we're pioneers,” Stothert said. “We set an example for the entire country."

In 2015, Children’s touched the lives of more than 163,000 children; nearly half of them were from outside of the Omaha metro area. In recent years, 60 percent of patient growth has come from outside of the Omaha metro, reflecting Children’s role as the region’s pediatric health care leader. Surgery volumes were up 13 percent last year alone. Meanwhile, projections indicate patient use of Children’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit will grow by 40 percent by 2025.

CBRE Healthcare is providing Owner’s Representative services for the new medical facility, including preconstruction, on-site project management, master budget and schedule development, project delivery team selection assistance, contract negotiation, project cost and schedule management, and project delivery team coordination.
