Dissimilar Metal Design (DMD) is proud to announce the completion of the facade for the new Kaplan Family Pavilion at The City of Hope Hospital in Duarte, CA. DMD crafted the Weathering Steel facade after realizing the architectural vision of the team at Belzberg Architects.
The 8M-project scope includes a new building which houses a museum exhibition and an event space, built alongside an outdoor pavilion in the very heart of the world-renowned hospital.
Taking inspiration from City of Hope’s evolving research and its environment, the Weathering Steel panels were hand crafted using weatherizing technology developed by DMD. The changing tactility of the patina will continue to develop, and enhance its durability and overall aesthetic with time.
The self-healing facade is warm and reminiscent of the reddish tones found within nature, and intended to respectfully compliment its surroundings. The coexistence of materials is designed to elicit intimacy for pause and reflection, while providing an aesthetically pleasing area designed for connection, healing, and meditation.
The project is slated to achieve a LEED® Platinum designation from the U.S. Green Building Council.
