ENERGY STAR Products Reduce Energy Consumption in Canada’s Healthcare Facilities

The Canadian Coalition for Green Health Care (the Coalition) is pleased to announce a new collaborative with Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) to increase the Canadian health services sector’s awareness of ENERGY STAR’s roster of high energy efficiency qualified products and suite of tools designed to complement a health care organisation’s sound energy management practices.

The Coalition will build on its network of environmentally-minded stakeholders and collaborators to help educate Canadian health care energy and facility managers on environmentally conscious options and procedures that they can implement in their facilities using an ENERGY STAR framework.

Increasingly, health care facilities across Canada have expressed their dedication to reducing their ecological footprint by adopting more sustainable practices and turning to environmentally-friendly products, like those certified by ENERGY STAR.

Many will be familiar with some of the 75 types of ENERGY STAR product categories that span lighting and office equipment, heating and cooling, water heaters, doors and windows, residential and commercial appliances which include food service equipment, and a growing list of recently added products such as electric vehicle chargers, pool pumps and water coolers. Of use to every energy and facility manager is ENERGY STAR’s Portfolio Manager software, an industry leading resource management tool that uses over 100 different metrics to assess and make recommendations on implementing energy (and cost) saving solutions. It also allows users to compare their building’s energy usage to that of similar buildings in North America.  Learn more at: https://www.nrcan.gc.ca/energy/efficiency/buildings/energy-benchmarking/3693

The Simple Savings Calculator from ENERGY STAR allows you to see how much money can be saved and the environmental benefits of buying ENERGY STAR certified products. Up to three models of a single product can be compared including annual operating and lifecycle costs, payback, total energy savings and total cost savings. Keep an eye out for the Coalition’s upcoming webinar on ENERGY STAR products and services as well as features articles in the Green Digest that will provide more details on medical imaging devices, food service equipment and green procurement.

According to Edward Rubinstein, Director of Environmental Compliance, Energy, and Sustainability at Toronto’s University Health Network: “ENERGY STAR is an important part of the University Health Network’s Sustainable Procurement and Energy Management programs. The ENERGY STAR logo gives us the confidence that sustainability has been included in the product design and makes it easier for the Energy and Environment team to recommend, specify, and confirm the use of energy efficient products in our hospitals.”
