Fencing installed to improve patient safety at N.Z. mental hospital

Fencing installed to keep patients from getting to a bridge that was a site of suicide attempts

New fencing will go up near the perimeter of Hillmorton Hospital in Christchurch, N.Z.,  so the mental health facility can deter people from getting to a bridge where a woman threatened to commit suicide twice in one day, according to an article on the Stuff website.

The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) granted the health board permission about a year ago to replace an existing fence on road reserve land near the hospital to make it more secure.

There are lockable high-care areas in the acute inpatient unit at Hillmorton, but most patients are able to come and go freely.

Hillmorton has been at the centre of recent workplace violence issues and planning has started to replace the acute inpatient unit.
