Florida governor gives assisted living communities 60 days to get generators

The facilities are also required to have enough fuel to enable them to maintain comfortable temperatures for at least 96 hours following a power outage

On Sept. 16, Florida Gov. Rick Scott gave all assisted living communities and nursing homes in the state 60 days to obtain generators, according to an article on the McKnight's Senior Living website.

The facilities are also required to have enough fuel to enable them to maintain comfortable temperatures — defined as at or below 80 degrees — for at least 96 hours following a power outage.

The action followed the death of 11 residents of the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills, in Hollywood, Fla., during Hurricane Irma.

The order is based on standards already in place at all hospitals in Florida.
