Former Hannibal hospital may get asbestos abatement

Before a renovation of the former St. Elizabeth Hospital can be considered, a cleanout of a section of the complex would have to occur

Before a renovation of the former St. Elizabeth Hospital in Hannibal, Mo., can be considered, a cleanout of a section of the complex — including asbestos abatement — would have to occur, according to an article on the Lake News Online website.

A potential investor is considering paying for a partial cleanup of the facilities interior, the article said.

St. Elizabeth Hospital, the second hospital constructed in Hannibal, opened its doors to patients in 1915.

After the hospital’s initial construction, additions were wrapped up in 1922, 1928, 1940, 1956 and 1973. The building ceased operations as a healthcare facility in 1993.

The Chapel Hill Commercial Group purchased the property in 2007, but closed the facility in 2009 after encountering financial issues.
