Healthcare facilities have long employed ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) in various settings. With the coronavirus pandemic, the technology has been adopted in the wider built environment.
A recent FacilitiesNet story by design firm HGA discusses the various ways UVGI is being applied. In addition to uses common to healthcare, such as tool and room disinfection, UVGI is being used to target high-touch areas such as escalator handrails. In some hospitals, ground-level robots emitting UV-C are being used to sanitize floors.
Light disinfection technologies under development include far-UV-C, which has the potential to be more effective at deactivating certain pathogens while potentially being safer to use in occupied space. Visible light disinfection to curb bacterial growth is also getting more attention.
