'Granny cam' bill advances in La.

Nursing home leaders criticized for attempting to water down legislation

A bill that would allow residents of nursing homes to keep surveillance devices in their rooms has advanced in Louisiana despite nursing home industry leaders' objections, according to an article on The Advocate website.

Nursing home industry leaders suggested hackers would try to intercept live feeds of their residents and get access to other sensitive medical information.

Industry leaders took heat for unsuccessfully attempting to add amendments that would have dramatically watered down the impact of the proposed law, the article said.

"I do not think hacking was their real concern," said former state Rep. Helena Moreno, who sponsored the bill. Moreno recently vacated her seat to join the New Orleans City Council. She attended the meeting to continue shepherding her bill which is now sponsored by Rep. Kirk Talbot, R-River Ridge. "The amendments would have gutted the bill and they know that."
