Hawaii State Hospital requires security upgrades before renovations

Oahu puts new demands on the hospital before it can expand


Before Hawaii State Hospital can proceed renovations, Oahu is requiring security upgrades, according to an article on the KITV website.

Some Hawaii State buildings need to be renovated, others torn down and replaced. 

In November, a patient with a violent past walked away from the hospital and ended up on the mainland. His escape resulted in security changes at the facility.   

After the incident, the Public Safety Department recommended adding technology to better monitor patients, change reporting procedures and putting up a 12' tall perimeter fence around buildings which house higher security patients.
