Healthcare design can learn from airlines

Airlines can offer lessons in the use of LED lighting and smart detailing of restrooms and storage areas


Healthcare facility design can take some lessons from the airlines as far as smart storage and compact bathrooms that are well designed with full amenities, according to an article on the Interiors & Sources website.

A hospital design often includes a lack of storage and separation between clean materials management and existing trash from the building — circulation required for the trash to be driven straight through clean materials management area. 

Designers are always looking for a better, more compact bathroom solution that meets not only ADA requirements, but also the actual circulation needed within a resident room for care givers and mobility devices. 

Emirates Airlines bathrooms include full showers and a designed “spa” experience. This approach to the design of bathrooms in healthcare could actually reduce square footages and establish a positive, safe outcome for patients and staff.
