'Heart of Healthcare' winner goes extra mile for patients

Environmental services aide from Hackensack University Medical Center recognized by the Association for the Health Care Environment

When "Heart of Healthcare" winner James Carlin Jr. was hired as an environmental services aide for Hackensack (N.J.) University Medical Center, he wasn't planning on building a career in the field, according to an article on the Health Facilities Maintenance website.

He started in environmental services in 2015 after a career in the food-service industry. He originally planned on transferring to security, but fell in love with the job.

His dedication led to the recognition by the Association for the Health Care Environment’s (AHE).

In addition to his main job, Carlin volunteers for the ES Sustainability Committee and champions the annual paper-recycling drive.
