Hilo Medical Center in Hilo, Hawaii, has adopted airport-style security measures after a man attacked four people in the emergency room last month, according to an article on the Honolulu Civil Beat website.
The ER's previously laid-back feeling ended after a man stabbed three hospital employees and punched another in the face March 20. All survived.
Guards now wave metal-detecting wands over patients and other people upon arrival at both the main and medic entrances to the ER.
One guard, Bryson Majamay, said about three-quarters of ER visitors have welcomed the extra security. The rest, he said, grumble and question why he has to look in their bags.
