University Medical Center Utrecht in Holland is outfitting luminaires with network-connected chips and sensors that keep track of the hospital's equipment, according to an article on the LEDs Magazine website.
Communication between the roaming assets and the fixed-point lights pinpointed the asset’s location, which the luminaires then transmit wirelessly to an information technology gateway wired to the hospital’s IT network.
The staff was then able to check the system to spot the whereabouts of a missing item.
System users can access the asset tracking functions via a smartphone app.
