Hospitals’ Security Officers To Get Tasers, Body Cameras

Facilities have faced growing concern around safety for their patients and providers

By Dan Hounsell

As if 16 months of a pandemic weren’t enough of a challenge for workers in healthcare facilities, they also must cope with the growing threat of workplace violence. Now, one Georgia health system is taking steps to address the threat.

Security officers at Atlanta-based Piedmont Healthcare's hospitals will get tasers and body cameras through a new agreement with Axon, according to Becker’s Healthcare Review

In recent years, hospitals have faced growing concern around safety for their patients and providers. In April, House lawmakers approved legislation that targets workplace violence in healthcare settings.

"Having these tools available is a part of our desire to equip the best healthcare security team possible," says Mike Hodges, system director of Piedmont public safety, in a press release. “It is important to us that our officers are capable of responding effectively to all tactical challenges in order to provide the best possible patient care environment."
