A fatal shooting at a Chicago hospital left an ER doctor, pharmacy resident and police officer dead have brought the need for active shooter training into focus, according to an article on the Philly website.

Many hospitals conduct regular, on-site active shooter drills to prepare staff on how to react in the event of a shooting.

Healthcare facilities must recognize the immediate impact and stress on our employees when these situations occur — even when they happen elsewhere, the article said.

Leaders should communicate the steps taken toward a safer environment. This could be enhancements to security or physical changes to areas impacted by the event.
