Children at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover, N.H, can "drive" themselves to the operating room to make the experience less scary, according to an article on the Sea Coast Online website.
The kids to drive to the operating room in a new white Mercedes Benz Power Wheels car. The car is remote controlled by a staff member, but the children feel they are in charge of the wheel.
The car was donated to the hospital by Dr. David Coppola, a general surgeon on staff who saw the idea on social media.
"We looked at the potential barriers, safety and infection control concerns. We started to research the car and overcame those barriers. The car is leather inside so it can be easily disinfected. It has a five-point harness and is remote controlled. The kids think they are driving the car, but we can control the car, so the safety concerns are taken care of. They are not going to be crashing into any walls,”he said.
