Lean, Green, and Clean Slay the Competition at the AGC’s 2016 Washington Contractor Awards

Shapiro & Duncan, Inc., the D.C metro area’s leading mechanical solutions provider of choice, announces that it has been recognized by the Associated General Contractors of Metro DC (AGC)’s 16th Annual Washington Contractor Awards program for its exemplary work on three key projects. The celebration event was held at the Newseum in Washington, DC on Tuesday, October 4, 2016.

The Washington Contractor Awards recognize leading General and Subcontractor members, ranging from under $5 million to over $100 million in annual revenues, for their achievements in several key categories. Shapiro & Duncan’s work on three local projects was selected as winners in three areas, including:

•       Best Sustainable Project - American University’s Washington College of Law

“It was an honor to have received this award for such a unique and cutting edge project. The American University Washington College of Law was the first project in America to utilize Zehnder Rittling’s radiant ceiling panel technology on a large scale, specifically 4,180 panels in total.  It was a privilege to work with Whiting Turner as they entrusted us to be the first contractor to implement Radiant Ceiling Panel technology in such a high profile, American institution. Because these panels are extremely energy efficient and have no moving parts, they are an ideal selection to promote sustainability and showcase how new technology can advance American HVAC design,” Ameen Khouri, Project Manager, Shapiro & Duncan (WCL project) shared. “This award also demonstrates special recognition of our Virtual Design Coordination department whose efforts allowed this new technology to be implemented, as well as the 120 men and women it took to finalize the installation. We hope that this project serves as living proof that pushing the envelope of sustainability results in rewards for all.”

•       Best Lean Project - Northern Virginia Data Center, also demonstrated in a video detailing the project and Shapiro & Duncan’s approach.

“Shapiro & Duncan being chosen as the AGC Lean Construction Awardee is not only a great honor, but yet another realization of our capabilities to meet the demands of fast track construction through shared knowledge, common goals, and a strong team relationship,” said John Hoke, Shapiro & Duncan’s Senior Project Manager. “Our Lean Construction Method approach was a key element to the overwhelming success of the Northern Virginia Data Center Project.”

•       Best Use of BIM - INOVA Women’s and Children’s Hospital, the third BIM recognition Shapiro & Duncan has received to-date from AGC;

“Winning a 3rd AGC Award for our BIM capabilities is a huge accomplishment for the Shapiro & Duncan Virtual Design Construction (VDC) department,” said Chris Canter, Shapiro & Duncan’s Director of Virtual Design Construction and Fabrication. “All of our VDC coordinators and support team put in countless hours modeling, coordinating, and detailing before any part of the onsite construction began. This is truly a team award that would not be possible without our talented Project Management, Fabrication, and Field support personnel!”

This most recent recognition follows a number of recent accolades Shapiro & Duncan has received for its industry-leading expertise. Other key tenets of its philosophy, such as its steadfast commitment to exceeding project goals and client expectations while promoting a culture of living by their corporate values every day, are key elements to its continued success and validation from the industry.
