Staff and patients at Pekin (Illinois) Hospital were placed on a Code Black Operational Lockdown and patients sheltered in place when a man with a gun tried to enter the hospital emergency room, according to an article on the Pekin Daily Times website.
Pekin Police said the department was contacted the man's family member who said he was on his way to Pekin Hospital and might have a gun.
An officer stopped him as he tried to enter the hospital.
"The hospital immediately took proactive steps and secured the facility, per our safety policies and procedures," said Pekin Hospital CEO Bob Haley.
The Pekin Hospital Emergency Management Team conducts regular drills at least every other month for all types of emergencies.
