Colchester East Hants Health Centre in Truro, Nova Scotia, recently became the first hospital in the province to receive LEED certification, according to an article on the Truro Daily website.
The facility achieved top standards in the areas of water efficiency, recycling, composting and in the use of local materials.
Energy efficiency targets are also being met through the use of such technology as automatic shut-off light switches and heat recovery by recirculating heat gases.
The hospital's healing garden and outdoor court also contributed to the environmental designation, said LEED design co-ordinator Christine Bales of Architecture 49.
"It's about integrating nature and bringing the outdoors in," she said.
