One employee was killed and another injured when a gunman opened fire inside the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Hospital-Highlands recently, according to an article on the Campus Safety website.
A 63-year-old nursing supervisor, was shot multiple times in the chest and later died during surgery. The injured victim is an employee of an infection prevention company. The gunman was eventually found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Birmingham Police Public Information Officer Peter Williston described the shooting as an “employee relation issue” during a press conference.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service Captain Harold Watson said the shooting points to the need for more active shooter training for first responders and for the general public to be more aware of their surroundings.
