Ontario healthcare facility hydro bill up despite cutting energy consumption by 25 percent

The cost of energy represents less than one per cent of the hospital's entire budget


Reducing energy consumption at Ontario's Peterborough Regional Health Centre by 25 percent from 2010 to 2016 did not prevent the hydro bill to rise eight percent, according to an article on The Peterborough Examiner website.

The Ontario Liberal government announced in March it will cut hydro rates an average of 25 percent,

The hospital found the 25 percent in energy savings through a variety of measures. First, it uses chillers to cool air and during the shorter, cooler seasons, it turns on its smaller, more energy efficient units.

The hospital also introduced software that automatically turns lights off and turns the temperature down in parts of the hospital when they are unoccupied.
