The Orlando, Fla., area's first 12-bed pediatric emergency department, opening at Florida Hospital's east Orlando campus, was build to serve a growing number young patients, according to an article on the Orlando Business Journal's website.
The department cost about $2 million and expects to see about 20,000 patients within the first two years.
Florida Hospital East Orlando already sees thousands of pediatric patients each year, treating 15,000 children in 2014.
Telemedicine technology will be used in the department, which will allow parents and caregivers the ability to speak with a physician about a child's needs to determine if a hospital visit is needed.
