Otis France provides elevators, escalators for ‘Nouvelle Samaritaine’ renovation project in Paris

Otis France has been chosen to provide elevators and escalators at the “Nouvelle Samaritaine” development before its re-opening to the public in 2018. Otis, the world’s largest manufacturer and maintainer of people-moving products, including elevators, escalators and moving walkways, is a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).

A major project to breathe new life into a historic place

For the renovation of the iconic buildings on Paris’ Rue de Rivoli and Quai du Louvre, with a total floor area of more than 70,000 square meters on 10 levels, the general contractor for the Samaritaine, a subsidiary of LVMH, selected Otis France to install 25 escalators and more than 40 elevators that will serve not only the La Samaritaine department store, but also the Hôtel du Cheval Blanc, offices, housing, and a day-care center.

Otis France won the contract following a months-long competitive process, which factored significantly the energy performance and environmental footprint of the installations.

More modern installations that consume less energy

To provide comfort, environmental sustainability and adaptability, Otis France will install its Gen2™ generation of elevators, manufactured at its plant in Gien, France. Gen2 elevators make use of innovative engineering and are more comfortable, quieter, and use less energy.

Designed to reduce the carbon footprint by optimizing dimensions, materials, and component weight, they include the latest energy-saving technologies such as LED lighting and the ReGen™ regenerative drive system, which when combined with the Gen2 machine provides a reduction in energy use of up to 75 percent compared to traditional elevators with conventional drives.

“We are proud to contribute to the renovation of this storied site, which is replete with history for all Parisians. It took careful consideration and attention to detail to build leading-edge technologies into these historic buildings while preserving the ‘soul’ of the buildings,” said Geoffroy Durandet, Vice President and General Manager, Otis France.
