Patience experience research informs healthcare design

Architects collected and analyzed demographic data, researched medical symptoms and identified personal preferences associated with various mental and behavioral health conditions

Before HDR architects recently began to design a new behavioral health clinic for a children’s hospital, the team got to know five "patients,"  according to an article on the Medical Construction & Design website.

The architects collected and analyzed demographic data, researched medical symptoms and identified personal preferences associated with different mental and behavioral health conditions.

The research was used to create five patient personas. Once the personas were created, scenarios were developed that told the story of each persona’s visit to the new clinic.

Each story included the following elements:

• Privacy and dignity

• Communication

• Navigation and flow

• Remote check-in

• Waiting vs. sub-waiting

• Amenities and resources

• Optimize check-out process

• Extending care beyond the clinic
