Putting the Glam into Senior Living Design

Many senior living companies are still seeking “traditional” designs which feature “old-timey” things. Many believe seniors want this style simply because they’re older, and the rationale is that they must like old things. Despite these assumptions, seniors actually want a variety of designs, some more contemporary, some more traditional, some a fusion of both. A few companies are taking strides to step outside of the box and give seniors more modern choices. The suburbs of Woodbridge, Va. might not be the top place you’d expect to see a contemporary senior living community with some glam and flair, but that’s exactly what people will find when they visit Tribute at the Glen. Jason Hinson, designer for Austin-based interior design firm studioSIX5, led the design inspirations for Tribute at the Glen.

“The owners of Tribute at the Glen gave us a lot of creative freedom, so we used our imaginations to present both interesting and timeless designs,” said Hinson. “There is an ambiance of understated elegance, with pops of glam throughout. It all started with the selection of some polished chrome pieces, then we selected other items that complemented those anchor pieces. Shiny materials carried through the interiors, giving the community a much more contemporary look. One of my favorite features is the custom carpets throughout. These coupled with eye-catching lighting really set the tone for a glamorous environment and boutique-hotel vibe.”

In addition to the custom carpeting and lighting, the community features cool neutral tones with pops of bright color. Vibrant backsplashes and accent pieces are complemented by textured neutral walls and countertops. Each amenity within the community was positioned as a “destination” with a unique look and feel, versus a room or space that mirrored another. These destinations include a beauty salon and barber shop, a movie theater, community and private dining rooms, an art studio, a library, a fitness area and other multipurpose areas for activities. The goal was to make the interiors both exciting and comfortable so people would enjoy living there.

“When I am considering what décor, color schemes, furniture and artwork I would like to use in each senior living community, I don’t think of what I imagine a senior would like, I think of designs that anybody would gravitate toward, myself included,” said Hinson. “I want the interior design to inspire people.”

Tribute at the Glen features 140 units dedicated to assisted living and memory care. It opened in January 2017 and is currently accepting residents.
