Elmhurst Hospital in Queens, N.Y., is housing homeless people in its decontamination unit, according to an article in the New York Post.
The unit, located in a trailer, is so cramped that people who seek refuge are forced to sleep in chairs.
Critics slammed the city’s repurposing of the trailer, charging it isn’t fair to either patients or the homeless.
“If there’s an emergency and they need that chamber, [the hospital] can’t use it because there are homeless people in there,” said Teamsters Local 237 President Gregory Floyd, whose members work as safety officers in the city-run hospital.
