Regulations, Codes & Standards Q&A: Dead-bolt lock on closet door

Brad Keyes discusses regulations for a dead-bolt lock on closet door

By Brad Keyes / Special to Healthcare Facilities Today

Q: Can we use deadbolt locks on a closet door located within an office? Would they need to be a latch style vs. a bolt-style?

A: As long as the closet door is not in the path of egress. If the closet is large enough to walk in and shut the door, then it would be considered in the path of egress, and you would not be able to install a dead-bolt lock on it. A standard passage latch set would be required.
