Abandoned shopping venues are being used as healthcare facilities


Healthcare providers are finding new opportunities for underutilized retail spaces, according to an article on the Health Facilities Management website. The efforts come with risks and rewards, the article said.

Early assessment of the opportunities and risks of the adaptive reuse of a retail site for healthcare use is key to a successful design.

Healthcare providers should start with zoning and site issues and assess infrastructure costs that can impact long-term operational costs.

While many sites have location advantages, the existing structures are often less visually appealing. Transforming these structures can range from recladding to complete reconstruction of the exterior.
