Schindler selected to provide elevators and escalators at Honolulu's HART Rail System

By Healthcare Facilities Today

MORRISTOWN, N.J. – Schindler Elevator Corporation announces that it has been awarded a multi-million dollar contract to install and maintain 49 custom machine room-less (MRL) traction elevators and 23 Schindler 9700 transit escalators throughout the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART) system’s 21 stations.

The 20-mile HART system will open its first phase in 2017 and is slated for completion in early 2019, making it the first fixed-rail public transportation system in Hawaii. Once finished, HART will allow for a swifter commute for the more than 950,000 residents of the Honolulu metro area, including stops at Honolulu International Airport and Aloha Stadium.

“We are very excited to work with HART to supply Schindler elevators and escalators for Hawaii’s first fixed-rail public transportation system,” said Greg Ergenbright, president, Schindler Elevator Corporation.  “Schindler’s proven commitment to safety, reliability and sustainability make us an ideal partner for HART, and our innovative technology will help make this ground-breaking vision a reality.”

The first delivery of Schindler products is expected in 2015. HART aims to replace up to 40,000 commuter vehicles on the roadways and 116,300 weekday passengers by 2030, at which time Honolulu is projected to use 70% clean energy.

“Many people have waited so long and worked hard to finally get to this point,” said Mayor Peter Carlisle. “This project will provide thousands of jobs for our local work force, relieve traffic congestion, and pave the way for an exciting and better future for Oahu residents.”
