On the heels of its 50^th anniversary last year, Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital is looking ahead. In February 2017 the hospital will begin a $49M modernization of patient care areas and infrastructure. Three intensive care units will be consolidated into one 24-bed ICU. Six operating rooms in use since 1983 will be replaced in a newly constructed surgery wing and four other ORs will be renovated. Sterile support areas will be expanded and upgraded. Two new elevators will connect the OR suite with the consolidated ICU a floor above. The Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) will be expanded and renovated to improve patient flow. In addition, the hospital’s Central Utilities Plant (CUP) will be modernized and its emergency generators replaced. Finally, locker rooms and lounge areas for physicians and staff will be modernized. The project is scheduled to last about 30 months and create 75 to 100 construction jobs during peak activity.

Sentara Virginia Beach General launched its next 50 years of service by purchasing a $2.7M daVinci®surgical robot to enhance gynecology, urology and colorectal surgery, including a comprehensive program for women in mid-life, demonstrating a continuing commitment to innovation and the evolution of the hospital’s clinical programs to serve a changing population. Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital also offers interventional cardiology and heart surgery, neurosurgical services, a dedicated Ortho Joint Unit and Back and Neck Center, the Coastal Cancer Center, a robust diabetes education center, Level III trauma services and an inpatient psychiatric unit.
