Violent incidents in healthcare settings have become more common, leading many facilities to implement countermeasures to protect patients and staff. Access controls enable healthcare facility managers to oversee and restrict access to areas of a building, while also enabling healthcare facilities to go into lock down if necessary.

“Should a critical event or violent incident occur, areas of an access-managed healthcare facility can be locked down instantly to help contain the threat,” Doug Coppola, senior director of healthcare solutions, North America at LenelS2, previously told Healthcare Facilities Today

Additionally, Coppola says advanced access controls can integrate personal panic devices and video analytics to identify and/or address a threat before it gets worse. Personal panic devices can also use real time location services to notify security of who needs help and direct them to where the event is unfolding. Integrated video with voice aggression analytics can help pinpoint an incident before it escalates, in turn allowing security to send a de-escalation team to mitigate the threat.
