Solar-powered facility helps sterilize medical tools for reuse


Solar-powered sterilization box facility allows for safer surgeries in developing countries, according to an article on the Tech Times website.

The incidences of surgical-site infections are about nine times higher in developing countries than in developed countries.

In a bid to mitigate this problem, Rice University researchers developed a solar-powered sterilization facility to sterilize medical tools for reuse.

Known as the Sterile Box, the low-power mobile facility is built into a 20-foot steel shipping container that houses all the needed equipment to prepare surgical instruments so they can be safely reused. The facility can be set up anywhere.
