Spectra254's patented 1000 Series UVC disinfection system kills 99.99 percent of airborne pathogens

Spectra254, a provider of UVC light disinfection solutions, announced that results from an independent laboratory study show Spectra254’s 1000 Series ultraviolet light system is 99.99 percent effective in killing airborne pathogens. The Spectra 1000 Series is a mobile room decontamination system designed to prevent Hospital Acquired Infections (HAIs) in operating and isolation rooms.

Performed by Antimicrobial Test Laboratories, the study found the Spectra 1000 Series UVC light disinfection system is 99.99 percent effective in killing three pathogens - Escherichia coli (E. coli), MS2 Bacteriophage (a human Norovirus surrogate) and Staphylococcus aureus bacterium (Staph) - in the air, decontaminating the air at a rate of 250 cubic feet per minute. MS2 Bacteriophage is eliminated at a rate of 99.9999% in 15 minutes. Airborne pathogens, such as those tested, are often spread when an infected person coughs, sneezes or has personal contact with another. These pathogens can remain suspended in the air on particles of dust or water droplets and then can be transmitted to others by inhalation or contact.

“Operating rooms and isolation rooms present the greatest challenge to infection preventionists,” said Sanford Green, senior executive of Spectra254. “The Spectra 1000 Series is the perfect complement to Spectra’s portfolio of application specific UVC disinfection solutions. Its ability to decontaminate both air and surfaces simultaneously provides a much higher level of disinfection without increasing room turnaround time.”

Antimicrobial Test Laboratories also studied the Spectra 1000 Series’ ability to kill surface pathogens. Their study concludes that the Spectra 1000 Series is 99.98 percent effective in eliminating C. difficile spores in five minutes at a distance of five feet. It is also 99.9 percent effective in killing MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), an Ebola surrogate, Human Enterovirus and MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) by 99.9% on surfaces.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that one in 25 hospital patients are diagnosed with an HAI, including those transmitted by air.

Spectra systems are manufactured and assembled in a U.S.-based ISO 9000 facility that meets or exceeds the quality assurance standards outlined by the International Organization of Standards.
