Staff: Two assaults by patients at Manitoba hospital within an hour show 'something has to be done'

The assaults happened at the locked forensic psychiatry unit at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg

A corrections officer and a police officer were attacked by patients in two separate incidents less than an hour apart on Friday at one of Manitoba's most secure psychiatric care units, according to an article on the CBC website.

The assaults happened at the locked forensic psychiatry unit at the Health Sciences Centre (HSC) in Winnipeg.

The head of the Manitoba Nurses Union says the two incidents represent a larger problem. Since last fall, there's been an increase in violence against nurses at Winnipeg hospitals, with as many as two or three incidents occurring on some days at the HSC.

"When I go to a Jets game I go through a metal detector and get my purse searched. But I can walk into any emergency room in any time of the day and nobody takes a second look at me," said union president Sandi Mowat.
