The University Medical Center of El Paso cancelled elective and non-emergency surgeries after receiving a preliminary denial of accreditation due to problems with the sterilization unit, according to an article on the El Paso Times website.
No elective surgeries will take place until UMC and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center are satisfied with sterilization processes, officials said. Texas Tech's doctors perform surgeries at the hospital.
The Joint Commission found was employees not following all of the policies and that the preventive maintenance by its licensed technicians was not up to industry standards.
The workers in the sterilization department will work with nurse managers and infection control specialists to improves processes, the article said.
