Studies explore how UV disinfection affects C. diff

Ultraviolet light was linked to a reduction in intensive care unit-acquired Clostridium difficile infections


Ultraviolet light was linked to a reduction in intensive care unit-acquired Clostridium difficile infections by a recent study published in the American Journal of Infection Control, according to an article on the Becker's Infection Control and Quality website.

Infection rates for the first year after ultraviolet disinfection was implemented were compared to the rates in the one-year period before UV disinfection was implemented.

Findings included:

• Hospital-acquired infection incidences were 22 less during the UV disinfect period

• The reduction was caused by a 70 percent reduction of C. diff in the adult ICUs
