Survey shows hospitals focusing on repurposing units

Health Facilities Management magazine and the American Society for Healthcare Engineering of the American Hospital Association surveyed 3,414 hospital and health system executives about trends in hospital construction

Many hospitals and health systems are or soon will be repurposing existing space as they move other services off campus and into the community, according to a recent survey by Health Facilities Management magazine and the American Society for Healthcare Engineering of the American Hospital Association.

The 2015 Hospital Construction Survey clearly gathered information 3,414 hospital and health system executives about trends in hospital construction.

More than half the respondents said they are repurposing space or considering the idea as they transition to value-based payment model, according to the survey.

“With a focus on population health management, there is a tremendous move to the ambulatory side,” Joe Sprague, principal and senior vice president at HKS in Dallas, said in an article about the survey. “In years past, we hadn’t paid as much attention to it in construction, but it is happening now.”
