Testing infection prevention effectiveness

Confirming the disinfection of high-touch surfaces is important in healthcare facilities

At Greenville, S.C.-based Bon Secours St. Francis Health System’s hospitals, the environmental services team began looking for a way to confirm the efficacy of their infection prevention efforts, according to an article on the Health Facilities Management.

The infection prevention team also was looking for a way to to prevent HAIs from cross-transmission.

The ES team and IP professionals looked at adenosine triphosphate (ATP) bioluminescence monitors.

The ATP system allowed the ES team to judge cleaning. No matter what the visual appearance of a horizontal or vertical surface throughout the hospital, ES staff could tell by swabbing and then testing the swab for 15 seconds whether the surface was clean.
