Tucson hospital cooled with radiant HVAC

Medical tower’s mini-central plant on the fourth floor makes the facility one of a kind

Banner Health’s 672,000-square-foot hospital in Tucson is the first in Arizona to implement chilled beams for patient rooms, according to an article on the ENR Southwest website.

Plus, the tower’s mini-central plant on the fourth floor makes the facility one of a kind, the article said.

“The fourth floor is everything,” said Charlie McGowan, mechanical engineer at AEI | Affiliated Engineers. “The idea is to centralize utilities and the bulk of maintenance work, to park staff there and they don’t need to be in patient spaces.”

The $300-million project adds to the existing medical center, previously only associated with the University of Arizona medical school.
