University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) will develop and co-manage an oncology center in Piedecuesta, Colombia, according to an article on the TribLive website.
The facility would serve Latin American patients who otherwise would need to travel hundreds of miles for treatment.
It would be the first private cancer center in the country. New cancer cases in Colombia are expected to reach 113,000 a year over the next decade, up from 80,000 this year, according to UPMC.
The planned hospital would include the oncology institute, 20 beds for inpatient oncology care and 870 beds overall.
